JUNE 2024

A new World Championship in sailing will kick off at Hankø. 38 teams from 11 nations in the Soling class are present on the regatta island in Fredrikstad to compete for the World Championship gold.

The countries represented are Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, the United Kingdom, the USA, Brazil, France, Germany, and Canada.

After the practice races on Tuesday, the real competition starts on Wednesday, with two daily races from Wednesday through the final day on Sunday.

There are two teams worth noting especially before the championship:

Brazilian Kadu Bergenthal, Vilnei Goldmeier, and Edgar Opptiz from the sailing club Veleiros do Sul, Porto Allegre, are the reigning world champions after winning last year’s World Championship in Milwaukee, USA. They have traveled across the globe intending to defend their title.

«We are expecting a great championship. We are both well-prepared and very focused on the races. We look forward to being with all the Soling sailors in a beautiful country like Norway,» says the team’s skipper, Kadu Bergenthal.

The other team that is likely to be among the top favorites is the Norwegian team of Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, and Christen Horn Johannessen. Nergaard and Horn Johannessen, along with Tomas Mathisen, became European champions in Soling just a month ago in La Baule, France, where they also defended their European title from the previous year. In the World Championship on home turf, they will undoubtedly be competing at the top.
